HUELGOAT's lake is only 15
hectares 'big' but makes all the difference to the pretty
look of the village. It flows into the Rivière d'Argent
or Silver River after passing through the
Chaos rocks and their old water mill. These stragne
shaped granite rocks are surrounded by mystery and
legends!
The water continues along a little 3km
canal which leads to the disused lead mines
and finally along to a small electric station run by the
EDF.

Over the years there have been many
changes made to the lake and its surroundings. In 2001,
heavy flooding brpopight about the collapse of the wall
along the Rue du Lac. The latter has been completely rebuilt
but it was also decided that it was necessary to cut down
the trees that used to be here. Since then, unfortunately,
the redevelopment of this area has been neglected. On this
page I'll show you some photos of the work that took place
and how the lake used to look before this work.

The trees behind the
wall on the slipway before the chop

The slipway is used for
water sports such as canoeing and has been rebuilt almost
identically

The trees provided shade
for walkers and for the cars parked behind them

Sitting on the pontoon of
the Crêperie de l'Argoat was an even greater pleasure when
you were surrounded by trees

IPots of shrubs help to make the Rue du Lac look pretty.

The main advantage of the
reconstruction is the little bit of extra space provided for
walkers when the wall was rebuilt further into the lake

It was tricky but if you
count the rings on some of the tree trunks which were
roughly cut you could tell that some were over fifty years
old

Some tall trees had
already been cut down on private land next to the lake.
